Picture It News
The life of the project did not end with the closing of the Hungarian Picture It! exhibition. Our international partners are themselves organising exhibitions to promote the images and the idea behind them.
One of these is the exhibition in Prague, which runs from 9-22 April 2024. and we are also planning more exhibitions around Prague and in other cities as Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc (dates to be confirmed).
In Warsaw, Picture It! will be exhibited at the Dom w Alejach and Dom Kultury Śródmieście during the Night of Museums (night of 18-19 May 2024).
The images from the project are now also available in our online gallery.
The project is supported by the International Visegrad Fund (IVF), co-financed by the governments of the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia. The IVF aims to develop ideas that support sustainable regional cooperation in Central Europe.
Our project partners are: Nadeje, pobocka Praha, Divadlo bez domova and Teatr Baza.
The Shelter Foundation's international photography exhibition "Picture It!" is open until the end of this month at the Bálint House in Budapest. Our photography project "Picture It!" - Our Streets, Our Stories - involved homeless people in the V4 countries this autumn. The project is supported by the International Visegrad Fund.
It's common for most of us to have our favourite place in cities: a favourite bench, the perfect view in a park. But how do those who literally call these places home see the city? - we asked the question this spring. The main aim of the "Picture It" project is to reduce prejudice and intolerance towards homeless people and people living in housing poverty.
An important guiding principle throughout the project was to enable other groups in society to gain direct and authentic experiences of homelessness from people who are homeless themselves. We wanted people who have experienced homelessness to show their less seen side, their vision, their art to members of mainstream society, thus reducing prejudice, helping social inclusion, and raising awareness.
During the project, 75 disposable cameras were distributed to 53 homeless people in the capitals of the Visegrad countries. The Shelter Foundation worked with 3 partner organisations: the Slovak Divadlo bez domova, the Czech Nadeje and the Polish Teatr Baza. The cameras submitted included around 3,000 usable images, from which an international jury of 11, led by photographer Gabriella Csoszó, selected 66 images for our album and 13 for our 2024 wall calendar, as well as the material for the exhibition. The publications are available free of charge in print and (soon) online at Shelter Foundation.
The exhibition of the selected pictures will be open until 28 November 2023 at Bálint House (1053 Budapest, Révai street 16.).
You are welcome to the opening of our new photo exhibition on Saturday, 28 October 2023, 16:00-19:00 at Bálint House (1065 Budapest, Révay u. 16.).
"Picture It!" - Our Streets, Our Stories is a photo project for homeless people in the Visegrad countries (V4), where we were interested in how homeless people see the city they live in, what their favourite places are - the competition was addressed to them with this aim. The images were very interesting, selected by an international jury and we are now presenting this exciting collection at the exhibition.
The opening of the exhibition will be attended by artists from the 4 countries, the international jury and representatives of the partner organisations involved in the project.
At the opening, Gabriella Csoszó and Jirí Pasz will share their thoughts on the images submitted and judged in the competition.
The project will also publish a 2024 calendar and a photo album, which will be available at the opening, as well as other publications by Menhely Alapítvány and the street paper ‘Fedél Nélkül’!
